DuPont Legal has promoted diversity internally through a variety of efforts, producing communication tools for sharing information about diversity in the legal industry, and by sponsoring numerous professional development and networking events for women and minorities. In recognition of these and many other efforts the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) presented DuPont Legal with its Diversity 2000 Award, and named an award recognizing the accomplishments of law firms after DuPont Vice President and Assistant General Counsel Thomas L. Sager, who has been a driving force for improving the involvement of minorities and women in the legal profession.
Mr. Sager has championed the cause for hiring, retaining and promoting minorities and women within DuPont’s legal department, as well as the law firms that do legal work for DuPont. Through his leadership, the DuPont Legal Model has received national acclaim for infusing business principles into the practice of law. And one of the founding principles of the Legal Model that Mr. Sager kept at the forefront is diversity, valued for the way it improves the quality of legal solutions and the creative results of legal teams.
The Thomas L. Sager Award is awarded to law firms for their demonstrated and sustained commitment to improve the hiring, retention and promotion of minority and women attorneys. Annually, within five separate regions of the United States, the MCCA Board of Directors encourages corporate legal departments on behalf of law firms and law firms themselves to submit nomination applications. In addition to the statistical data that is set forth in the application, MCCA’s Board of Director’s chooses award recipients based on areas such as: recruitment; r etention; m entoring ; p romotion; collaborative efforts with community and bar associations; and innovative practices that result in sustainable efforts to increase diversity.
In describing his feelings about the award and its recipients, Thomas L. Sager said, “I am extremely proud to have my name associated with this award. I send my deepest and heartfelt congratulations to the firms in recognition of their continuing extraordinary commitment, creativity and results in promoting diversity within the legal profession. I extend my personal thanks and best wishes for continued success to all of those professionals within the award winning firms who labored to make a difference in this incredibly challenging but all so important area.”
